They All Laughed When I Said, “They Can Carry Me Out in a Pine Box”... ...But They Stopped Laughing When They Saw How Easy It Was to Stay. They all laughed when I told them I’d never leave this house. That they could carry me out in a pine box before I’d ever move to a retirement home.
They laughed because they thought staying here would be too hard. Too lonely. Too unsafe. They laughed because they didn’t know about the revolution happening in aging.
They didn’t know that my home could be adapted with just a few simple changes. They didn’t know about the support network that would make my independence not only possible but easy. They didn’t know about the community that would keep me connected, active, and fulfilled.
They stopped laughing when they saw the stairlift glide effortlessly to the second floor. They stopped laughing when they saw the walk-in shower with safety bars that looked more like a spa than a bathroom. They stopped laughing when they met the friendly faces who check in, help out, and make staying at home not just feasible, but wonderful.
I stayed. I thrived. I lived my way. And yes, one day they might carry me out of here in a pine box. But until then, this is my home.
